Gourd (Pumpkin) – 2 cups (cut into small pieces)
Chana dal – 1/2 cup (30 minutes soaked in water)
Tomato – 2 (finely chopped or puree)
Ginger – 1 inch (grated)
Green Chilli – 1 (Finely chopped)
Asafoetida – 1 pinch
Cumin – 1/2 teaspoon
Turmeric Powder – 1/2 teaspoon
Coriander powder – 1 tsp
Red chili powder – as per taste
Salt – as per taste
Desi ghee or oil – 2 tablespoons
Green coriander – for decoration
Method of making gourd gram dal:
Put 1 cup of water and a little salt in the pressure cooker and boil the soaked gram dal and boil it till 2 whistles. Lentils should not be melted much, remain light.
Prepare Tadka:
Heat ghee in the pan. Add cumin and asafoetida to it. Then add ginger and green chili and fry it lightly.
Now add tomatoes to it. Add turmeric, coriander powder, red chili powder together. Fry the spices until the tomatoes are soft and leave the oil.
Add gourd:
Now add chopped gourd pieces and fry for 2-3 minutes. Then add some water and cover it and cook for 5 minutes, so that the gourd becomes a little soft.
Now mix boiled gram dal in gourd. If needed, add some more water. Mix everything well and cook on low flame for 5-7 minutes, so that the spices dissolve well in lentils and gourd.
Finishing Touch:
Finally add green coriander and keep it covered for 5 minutes. This doubles the fragrance and taste.

Note: If you are making for children, keep green chillies less and add some cream or ghee on top, which makes the taste even more mild and rich.
